The Stevenson Trail (GR70) follows in the footsteps of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who travelled these lands in 1878 with his donkey Modestine.

Connecting Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille (near Le Puy-en-Velay) to Saint-Jean-du-Gard, the route crosses three iconic regions: Vivarais, Lozère, and the Cévennes. Approximately 270 km long, this trail is renowned for its wild and contrasting landscapes. You’ll explore the volcanic plateaus of Velay, with their open panoramas and stone villages; the Vivarais and Gévaudan mountains, lands of deep forests and legends; and, of course, the Cévennes, with their steep valleys, chestnut groves, and Mediterranean atmosphere.

Traditionally divided into 12 stages of 18 to 25 km, we offer stays with shorter stages in order to take the time to visit the typical villages (Langogne, Pradelles, Florac, Saint-Jean-du-Gard), to enjoy the landscapes, without rushing and of course to make the path accessible to families, beginner hikers or walkers wishing to take their time.
