- L’Autre Chemin
- Discovering the Saint-Guilhem trail
The Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert Trail is a magnificent hiking trail that takes you from the high plateaus of the Aubrac Regional Natural Park to the wild gorges of the Hérault Valley – a Grand Site de France. L’Autre Chemin offers you the option of organizing your hiking trip over 13 or 14 days; you can even travel the trail in two sections to spread your discovery over two years. The landscapes, both natural and heritage, are simply incredible. The initially very “watered” vegetation of the Aubrac becomes very Mediterranean, and you’ll discover the Causses de Sauveterre and Méjean, as well as the Cirque Navacelles – a Grand Site de France. You’ll be captivated by the vertigo of the wide open spaces. You experience the landscape, you blend into it… The trail is a bit strenuous and requires good endurance, especially during hot weather. A little storm in the Tarn, which here describes its most beautiful meanders, or a little swampy watering becomes very enjoyable!

Aubrac
Located south of the Massif Central, Aubrac is a mid-mountain massif surrounded by the Lot River and the magnificent Truyère River. A vast expanse, the meadows invite contemplation as far as the eye can see, granite dots the landscape as do the herds. Rivers water everything. It’s a wild but inhabited landscape, which is what makes this region so rich. A space shared between Cantal, Lozère, and Aveyron, the starting point for your journey to Saint-Guilhem.
The great Causses
High plateaus overlooking the Jonte and Tarn valleys, they are made of limestone and dolomites dating back to the Jurassic period and formed at the bottom of geological seas. They are full of underground cavities called sinkholes (Armand, Dargilan, Bramabiau sinkholes). You may have the opportunity to come across Prezwalski’s horses there.

The Aigoual massif & Navacelles cirque
The end of the plateaus and places with slightly steeper slopes composed of granite are made (mainly) of granite dating back around 330 million years. Your route will take you near Mount Aigoual (1,567 m) and its famous observatory which endures the harsh winters year after year. Your path will take you to the town of Le Vigan then towards the Navacelles cirque, classified as a Grand Site de France. A magnificent place which offers an incredible panorama and lets you glimpse the Vis river at the origin of its erosion.
The Serene mountain and the Herault Valley
After the Cirque de Navacelles, your steps will lead you to a plateau before reaching another cirque, the cirque de l’Infernet (or the “end of the world”) which will take you to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and its Gellone Abbey.
